You have described most of the ideas accurately and are using appropriate subject terminology. This is not yet a pass however. In order to achieve a pass you need to include a description of what data gathering agencies are. You mention Rajar, so just go on to explain how Rajar is an example of a data gathering agency. You are beginning to refer to examples. To achieve a Merit you need to give more detailed examples. You could use the examples from the text book or the example of your own production. For examples of data gathering agencies, use the ones we looked at in class which are also mentioned in the book (BARB, RAJAR, Ofcom, etc.)

Temporary soundtracks - put an already existing soundtrack into the movie timeline as a template and work on that
Don't copy the temp. soundtrack however, start deconstructing and only take small bits as inspiration How you are going to approach the music? Themes and motifs Evolve them into different moods, so establish a theme first Associate certain soundtracks with characters - antagonists would have a dark sinister theme, protagonists would have a happy theme etc Track volume - add points in the track to adjust volume -Useful for strings, realism -Adjusting volumes for each instrument can greatly enhance your music Keywords Velocity - how hard you hit the key (softness/hardness of the notes) Minor keys - more happy -D♭, E♭, A♭ Major keys - more sad -D, E, A Perfect fourth (P4) - F Augmented fourth (aus4th)-F# 4/4 - 4 quarter notes per bar Wholetone notes - magical realism Scales Major - C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C Minor - C,D,E♭,F,G,A♭,B♭ Pentatonic - C,D,E,G,A Blues - C,E♭,F,G♭,G,B♭ Pentatonic scales - all the black keys |

Am I the only one left in the un iverse who, whilst admiring lady G's acumin for generating interest and cash... finds her use of imagery childish and self indulgent.
Her Judas video is a prime example with its bikers sporting the names of the apostles on the backs of their designer leathers and a Jesus representation wearing a fashionable crown of thorns... There is biblical intertextuality with feet washing and the kiss BUT there is no real purpose or point to the imagery except for its controversy and its effect on offended christians... behind all the superb camerawork and effects there is nothing else there, religious icons and imagery may be sprinkled like product placements throughout the narrative but it remains vacuous and the empty lyrics add nothing of substance. Madonna's "Like a prayer" caused huge offence at the time but in her case the religious imagery could be productively analysed alongside an original artist's message and ideas. Gaga's fans love it all and, like the great G herself, bask in the hype and strangeness oblivious of the lack of any point or meaning..... |

Music was defined as ‘funky’
James Brown was the first one to start the ‘funky’ trend by using a catchy and interesting rhythm where the melody didn’t really matter. The trend was soon followed by people such as Stevie wonder. James Brown revolutionized Black music. All music was built on a similar beat. Black songs were usually written by past experiences of the artist, which is usually based on their personal feeling. They hoped that their personal feeling is something that people can relate to and want to listen. Funk was defined as black music. Martin Luther King’s death brought a different approach to Black Music. James Brown used his fame to get empowerment for black people after the death of Martin Luther King. After his death their were lots of riots. Which led to the black representation of being ‘bad ass’ and rebellious. Songs soon became based on Martin Luther King’s teachings. Music began to have meaning as well as a good beat and rhythm. |

Are men and women represented differently here? How? When? Is that a problem? IS it offensive? Is it a bad example? Or is it an example of a post-feminist performer (Fergie) using her appearance to make a living?

The genre of this video is rap. You can tell this because of the many icons used to demonstrate it, such as the clothing, jewelry, dancing and the lyrics in the video. 50 Cent's star persona is conventional for a black man in the media: he is tough ('gangsta'), interested in money and women, and enjoys material goods. His appearance is wearing tracksuits, bling (mainly religious), hoodies, and caps, implying that he is shady, conventional of the rap genre. Also displayed in the video are scantily clad women, who are represented as dependent on the men and 'sex symbols'. This suggests that the video's intended audience is males. There is a bright palette. Most of the camera angles are eye level, with a few close-ups of his face as he raps. The theme of the music video and song is not serious, mostly about a rapper gloating about his success which is conventional.

Theme: Seems to be focussed on "CHOICES" because human beings have the potential to be either destructive or creative. All one has to do is choose. This is shown by the sign that the two bikers see in the beginning, one having a dove (symbolising peace) and the other having a corporate symbol.
The video also addresses "FREEDOM", which is shown in the lyrics: "I can ride my bikes with no handlebars" and another point that the video makes is "THINKING BIG" - The video starts off with "I can ride my bikes with no handlebars" and then proceeds to greater things such as "I can lead the nation with a microphone" and "I can end the planet in a holocaust". However, it ends at its starting point "I can ride my bikes with no handlebars" to remind us that no matter how big we are, we must never lose sight of what we started off as. Symbolism: Several times in the video, the dove as a symbol is destroyed. Once an actual dove is killed by an Eagle (the bird of prey), as another Eagle (the fighter jet) flies overhead. The second time, a wrecking ball demolishes a wall with the dove painted on it which is located next to a billboard displaying the corporate symbol. Genre codes: This music video is Rap rock. It follows the rock codes by taking a low angle shot the armored man, presenting his authority. It also presents the good guy as one of us, by using eye-level shots. Star persona: The corporate friend is shown to have a dictator-like position of power, while the other friend has become a radical against him. Usually, in a rap video, the radical friend would have been expected to change his friend and both would have fought together. However, the rebellious friend is shot and killed, along with all of the other followers, in front of the shocked corporate friend. Hence, this music video shows a sense of reality, by being different.

Excellent! A good start to constructing an analysis. You need to develp the 'star persona' part, though - is Underwood being associated with certain qualities? Certain emotions? Even, if you're feeling ambitious, a certain political stance on recent news events? (Where was her husband?)
Also, just push yourself a little more to get those theories in - Buscombe when talking about icons, U and G when discussing audience... there is also a narrative here, so will any of our narrative thery help us to describe and analyse this? Your next coursework will be on representation, though, so maybe that's where our interest should be. Oh, and genre - you're clearly a HUGE country fan so go and watch the most famous video (possibly) of the last ten years. And possibly my personal favourite of all time... 'Hurt' by Johny Cash.

-singer turns into a rockstar in the climax of the vid (end) by wearing more serious clothing and having the camera facing below him -high angle shots used to before climax to make the video more fun |

This song is basically about a teenager who has celebrity worship syndrome. He is obsessed with Eminem and in the video it shows him writing letters to Eminem talking about recent events and things that they have in common. This music video mainly focuses on the teenager and not the actual singer, but the video shows the teenager. This video has a very dark palette and some low angle shots and high angle shots. When he writes the letter, it is filmed in low angle shots, this is to make him look big and look like a good person. The whole video has a dark palette and often has lightning and thunder, this is to make it look like its a depressing and "emo" kind of song. The clothing used in the music video is all "gangster" clothing, baggy clothes and jeans, hats etc. This happens quite a lot in rap music videos
