CINEMATOGRAPHY

As one of the five production roles for I.B. Film, this is clearly a crucial area, within which many of you will want to specialise. For those of you who are keen photographers, the role of cinematographer offers you a logical connection with many of the technical and artistic challenges similar.

Cinematography can be approached from several different perspectives. Generally speaking we can divide the demands of the role by categorising in the following way

TECHNICALITIES- (Including LIGHTING, WHITE BALANCE, APERTURE etc)

AESTHETICS- (Incorporating specific FILM GENRES such as GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM & FILM NOIR, MISE EN SCENE and interpretations of beauty)

ARTISTS- (Linked to AESTHETICS) but given your study of the AUTEUR THEORY from Term 3, you will have already considered the significance of cinematographers as key artistic influences within the filmmaking process. Greg Toland in Citizen Kane is a good example to begin this debate.

TEXTS- As part of this unit we will focus on specific films which are of significance from the perspective of cinematography. Some of these are also included in the NARRATIVE unit and subsequently consider this as an opportunity to test/revise your knowledge of film narratives. Equally, we will support the development of your learning using two documentaries.
