Useful terms and conceptsThe Art of Sound - Rene Clair essay (1929)

FilmSound.org - EXTREMELY useful!

Some theories about film sound; also a useful glossary

Characteristic sound: A characteristic sound is a sound perceived from the protagonist's point of view. This sound is deliberately done to give an in-sight to how the character feels. This can be done in different ways, the sound engineer may use a diagetic souce of sound or a non-diagetic sound to enhance, heighten or emphasis a specific sound.

For instance- in 'The Matrix' (7:18 to 8:00 ) the computer says- Knock Knock Neo - therefore a very fast cresendo of a high pitch sound comes right before the big 'Knock Knock' sound on his door, hence communicates to the audience that Neo suspects that the anonymous person talking to him through his computer is knocking on his door conveying that Neo is scared.

Anempathetic Sound:
A sound that contradicts or is indifferent the emotion of the scene, usually diegetic sound.
example: the continuation of the shower sound after the female character's death in the shower scene from PsychoThe sound continues as if nothing happened, which adds eeriness to the impact of the scene.

On-Location Sounds

Sound recorded at the actual location of principal photography, whether on-stage at a movie lot or on-location.Background sound such as honking horns or shouting people or even the noises of the film crew itself can obscure dialogue or otherwise produce an effect that the director does not want in the sound of the film.
