During the lengthy second-half of the summer term, your main objectives in Film Studies will involve an exploration of the
AUTEUR THEORY,
THE AVANT GARDE, CINEMATOGRAPHY & THE
INDEPENDENT STUDY.
We will begin by considering the history of the
AUTEUR THEORY by looking at the Keynote presentation taken from Leo Baudry. Our text of study will be
CITIZEN KANE including the BATTLE FOR
CITIZEN KANE, a documentary on film (always good for your
Independent study) which explores the importance of institutional determinants on texts, including SHEP as context.
S- SOCIAL CONTEXT
H- HISTORICAL CONTEXT
E- ECONOMIC CONTEXT
P- POLITICAL CONTEXT
Our study of
Citizen Kane will consider the importance of the director, script-writer and cinematographer. We will assess the form wars from the 1970s and the antagonism between Peter Bogdanovich (Film Director & Critic) & Pauline Kael (Film Critic & Feminist).
Our consideration of Greg Toland's cinematography from
Citizen Kane will be juxtaposed with Gunnar Fischer, the cinematographer of Ingmar Bergman's
The Seventh Seal. The latter will also be used to begin considering the significance of AVANT GARDE, experimental cinema.
