Buscombe’s theory:Location: Meadow - This resembles peace and quiet. This was an introduction to the storyline in the video, this mood of peace and quiet is shown as a time of equilibrium for the two characters. A city, modern-like, skyscrapers - gives a grand feeling, very urban and civilized. A suburban area with houses and posters on walls - gives a lax and peaceful mood. The director of the video wanted to show two different locations representing the two characters, having different goals and influences in area. Appearance: One man is dressed in casual clothing, jacket, T-shirt and jeans - This signifies very relaxing moods. One man is dressed in a suit - This signifies a serious person, wealthy and in control. This is another comparison that the director created, that one person is peaceful and one is very dominant and serious, relating to the storyline. Homeless guy, bearded, ragged clothing - This resembles poverty and corruption in communities with the uprising of technology and modern ideas with limitless possibility. And the peaceful guy, taps his on the shoulder, relieving him, like he will solve everything. Bandit, hat on and scarf around face - This symbolizes rebellion and protesting, which in the end he and the main peaceful guy do and dies. High angle shot. Armored man, with technologically advanced body armor - This symbolizes power and dominance, in the camera shot, he is shot at an low angle shot. Do you find this valuable?

Tool:Street Sign - The street sign had two ways on it, left and right, the left being the corruptive side, represented by a sign with the letter “C” on it and the right being the peaceful side, represented by a dove. The two character take different paths. Dove - This is shown and the dove is killed by a bigger, black bird. The dove resembled the peace of the character that chose the path with the dove on it. Big, black bird, like an eagle of some kind - This is shown with the dove and it kills it with talons. This tool is cleverly used to give you a hint of the ending, where the character that took the modern way kills the peaceful one. This is also to resemble that peace is always destroyed by evil or modern ideas. Plane - This comes in after the dove killing, which resembles possibilities and is a modern index, this was to enforce the idea that modern ideas have won the battle and defeated peace. Bikes - This relates to the song name, “Handlebars” where the lyrics says “I can ride my bike with no handlebars.” Construction of skyscrapers - This represented the modern character building his kingdom. and spreading his power. The skyscraper is the highest out of all the others, meaning his power will be dominant over all. Television - Another modern index. It has the modern guy’s face on it and this shows his expansion of power. CCTV - Another modern index that shows expansion in technology and possibility. Wrecking ball - This is shown to demolish a wall with a picture of a dove on it, the symbol of peace. Another semiotic that shows that modern possibilities and ideas ruin peace. Billboard - Another modern index. A poster with the modern guy’s face on it, with LIAR written on it - This is showing their conflict being serious at this stage and advancing onwards. Lyrical analysis:27 of the word “can” is mentioned in the lyrics, this is repetition to symbolize possibilities in the world being plentiful. “I can ride my bike with no handlebars.”, “I can split the atom of a molecule.” The beginning of the song, the things that the narrator can do is small and quite insignificant but as the song progresses, those things become from “I can keep the rhythm with no metronome.” to “I can end the planet in a holocaust!”. This is the main motto of the storyline and the song, which is that innovation is growing in the world, very quickly and we humans invent more and more but often only the most destructive inventions get attention and greatly praised by the community. And we can see this in the lyrics, where the corrupted character is powerful because “I can split the atom of a molecule.” and “I can guide a missile by satellite.”. The lyrics also show how power corrupts, “I can hand out a million vaccinations or let them all die from exasperation.”, “Have them all healed of their laceration or have them all killed by assassination.” This shows that the character is corrupted by power, hence the famous quote “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” and the video shows that the peaceful character dying in the end at the hands of the corruption of the other guy. Star persona: An image of peace and in-depth philosophical knowledge is shown in the video, expressed by the storyline and the lyrics in the world, using the video to express their views on the world as a whole, to give a deep image to the band itself.
